Your Dasha Timeline Explained: How Shubh Time Interprets Your Planetary Periods
Your chart is static. Your life is not.
A Vedic birth chart captures the sky at the moment you were born. It describes your personality, tendencies, and potential. But it doesn't tell you what themes are active in your life right now, or what's shifting next.
That's what the Dasha system does. It's the classical Vedic framework for understanding how planetary influences unfold over time — not as predictions of specific events, but as a map of recurring themes, energies, and areas of life that come into focus during different periods.
Shubh Time implements the Vimshottari Dasha system — the most widely used Dasha framework in Parashari Jyotish — and translates each period into plain-language interpretations across six life domains.
What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari means "120 years." The system divides a human lifespan into planetary periods (Dashas) totaling 120 years, each ruled by one of the 9 Navagrahas. The starting point and sequence are determined by your Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
The nine major periods (Mahadashas) have these durations:
| Planet | Duration | Classical Theme | |--------|----------|-----------------| | Sun (Surya) | 6 years | Leadership, authority, self-expression | | Moon (Chandra) | 10 years | Emotions, mind, nurturing, public life | | Mars (Mangala) | 7 years | Action, courage, conflict, energy | | Mercury (Budha) | 17 years | Communication, intellect, business | | Jupiter (Guru) | 16 years | Wisdom, expansion, teaching, dharma | | Venus (Shukra) | 20 years | Relationships, beauty, wealth, pleasure | | Saturn (Shani) | 19 years | Discipline, endurance, responsibility, karma | | Rahu | 18 years | Ambition, obsession, unconventional paths | | Ketu | 7 years | Detachment, spirituality, past-life themes |
Each Mahadasha is further divided into 9 sub-periods (Antardashas), creating a two-level timeline. For example, during a Jupiter Mahadasha, you'll pass through Jupiter-Jupiter, Jupiter-Saturn, Jupiter-Mercury, and so on — each sub-period lasting months to years and blending the themes of both planets.
What Shubh Time shows you
When you request a Dasha interpretation (via the web app or the API), you get two views:
1. Full Timeline (GET /v1/dasha/:chartId/interpretation)
Every Mahadasha and Antardasha period in your life, with a plain-language interpretation for each. Each period includes six life-domain breakdowns:
- Overall theme — The defining energy and focus of this period
- Career — Professional opportunities, challenges, and directions
- Relationships — Interpersonal dynamics, family, partnerships
- Health — Physical and mental well-being tendencies
- Finances — Wealth patterns, spending, and income themes
- Spirituality — Inner growth, practice, and philosophical development
Plus two contextual layers:
- Dignity note — Whether the ruling planet is strong (exalted, in its own sign) or challenged (debilitated, in an enemy sign) in your specific chart. This modifies the interpretation: an exalted Jupiter Mahadasha expresses wisdom and prosperity more easily than a debilitated one.
- House context — Which house the ruling planet occupies in your chart. Jupiter in the 9th house (dharma, higher learning) plays out differently than Jupiter in the 6th house (service, health challenges).
2. Current Period (GET /v1/dasha/:chartId/current)
Your active Mahadasha and Antardasha right now, with:
- Full interpretation for both levels (same six-domain breakdown)
- Transition alert — How many days until your current Antardasha ends, what planet takes over next, and a bilingual summary of what themes are approaching
The current-period endpoint is not cached, because it's time-sensitive — the answer changes as you move through your timeline.
Why dignity and house matter
Two people in a Saturn Mahadasha will experience it differently depending on where Saturn sits in their respective charts.
Saturn exalted in the 7th house (Libra): discipline and commitment strengthen partnerships. The 19-year period tends to bring stability in relationships and professional collaborations, though it demands maturity.
Saturn debilitated in the 1st house (Aries): the same 19 years can feel more restrictive — a period of learning patience, dealing with health or self-image challenges, and building resilience through adversity.
Shubh Time computes the dignity (exalted, own sign, friendly, neutral, enemy, debilitated) from the actual planetary position in your chart, and selects the house context from the Lagna-relative house number. These aren't generic descriptions — they're specific to your chart.
All text is bilingual
Every interpretation is returned in English and Hindi. The Hindi text uses standard Jyotish terminology — महादशा, अंतर्दशा, गृह, भाव — not machine translation.
What this is not
The Dasha interpretation describes themes, not events. A Jupiter Mahadasha doesn't mean you'll get a promotion on a specific date. It means themes of wisdom, expansion, and growth tend to be more prominent during that period. How those themes manifest depends on your actions, circumstances, and the rest of your chart.
The language throughout is hedged: "tends to," "often brings," "is generally strong." This reflects how classical Jyotish treats Dasha — as a framework for understanding life's rhythms, not as a deterministic prediction of outcomes.
For developers
Two endpoints:
Full timeline (cached 24h):
GET /v1/dasha/:chartId/interpretation
No auth required in alpha (rate-limited 100 req/hr/IP). Returns all Mahadasha + Antardasha periods with six-domain interpretations. Suitable for rendering a full timeline view.
Current period (not cached):
GET /v1/dasha/:chartId/current
Returns the active periods with transition alerts. Suitable for dashboard widgets, notification triggers, and "what's active now" views.
The companion features
The Dasha interpretation works alongside two other features:
- Chart interpretation (
GET /v1/charts/:chartId/interpretation) — the static "who you are" reading. Personality, planet placements, yogas. - Muhurta scoring (
POST /v1/muhurta/windows) — the "when should I act" engine. Uses Dasha harmony as one of its 10 scoring factors, connecting your personal timeline to event timing.
Together, these three features form the complete Shubh Time experience: who you are, what themes are active, and when to act.
